NBCS Technology - Roller Coaster design
Experimentation time is the time to try out your skills and apply them to the best ideas that you had when you brainstormed the best features to include.

During this phase of the project you should be able to present some prototypes of your ideas. You may be able to develop these models further so that they eventually become your final project.

You should produce prototypes for:

To reach TASK COMPLETE, you must produce a ROOLER COASTER TRACK prototype

EXPERTS will produce TWO prototypes at EXPERT level

GURUS will produce all THREE prototypes at GURU Standard

Please aim to complete your prototypes

Creativity time

This week we are moving on to the creative side of your project.

While we will be working on TWO Phases, the amount of work required for both phases is less than each of the previous phases.

  1. to set your PERSONAL GOALS in the C4S phase  AND
  2. to create your BRAINSTORM in the IDEAS phase

  • EXPERTS will complete TWO activities in each phase
  • TECH GURUS will complete THREE activities in each phase

Research Week

This week it is time to have fun with RESEARCH.
  • There are FIVE tasks to be attempted by Tuesday 19th February
  • TECH GURUS will complete ALL FIVE sections at GURU standard
  • EXPERTS will complete FOUR sections at EXPERT standard
  • TASK COMPLETE status is achieved once THREE sections have been completed
  • MORE WORK REQUIRED is your status UNTIL you have completed THREE sections

Click the image above to go to the LEARN page to find out more about the tasks.

NB Please REMEMBER to show the evidence of your weebly website work to either Mr Dunphy or Ms Jeffery-Bilich so that your TRACKING STATUS shows your most recent status.

Your Digital Design (Roller coasters) lessons will usually start with Mr Dunphy opening this weebly blog which will have the basic instructions for you to follow for that particular week. You can choose to follow the blog or to use the Learn page which looks like the image on the left. If you are away, you can always find the current work by visting this blog.

This week we will introduce your Digital Design projects:
  1. 3D Roller coaster design
  2. 3D Carriage design
  3. Advertising brochure
You will have two design activities to complete this week, DUE FRIDAY 8th. You should be able to complete them in class without the need for homework.
  1. Design Activity 1 - Design & Technology
  2. Design Activity 2 - The Design Process

In order to complete these tasks, you will need to create your own Weebly account. In your Technology tab, you will need to create a tab for Digital Design. Your Digital Design tab will need separate tabs for each of the sections numbered 1-7 in the Learn home page (image above).

Your Roller Coaster project is due to be submitted on Monday 3rd December.

You will need to:
  1. Ensure your weebly is complete
  2. Submit your Roller Coaster design made with the NoLimits software
  3. Submit your Carriage Design made with the Google SketchUp software
  4. Submit your advertising brochure
Rate your skills

When you have mastered a Rollercoaster skill, show it to Mr Dunphy or Mr Alcock  who will give you a score for each skill. You will be able to get extra points for helping someone else to master the skill.

It is now time to start designing your own Rollercoaster.

Before you start, please refer to the Design Briefs:
  1. RollerCoaster Design Brief
  2. Carriage Design Brief

There are tutorials available on the NBCS Portal Learn page to help you understand how to create your Rollercoaster and carriage designs.
  • Read the information on the "Understanding RollerCoasters" page to get an idea about how RollerCoasters work.
Add your answers to the "Parts of a RollerCoaster" acivity to the "Ideas" page of your website.

Will you accept the mission to design a thrillling RollerCoaster demonstrating your funderstanding of how Rollercoasters work?

If yes, click on the image above or the button on the right.

The "HOME", "RESEARCH" and "IDEAS" pages need to be complete in your website by the end of this week, ie END OF TERM 3
It is time to try out the NoLimits software that you will use to design and create your Rollercoaster.

Click the "NoLimits Info" button on the right to get information about downloading a demo version on to your PDD. There is also some information about how to purchase the full version of the software for $29.99

Once you have downloaded a version of the NoLimits software, complete the website activities on the "Explore" page

Once you have done some exploration of different Rollercoasters using the NoLimits software, you need to start thinking about some good ideas for the design of your Rollercoaster.
